Rooms
Feel a 100-year history in Kyo Machiya

The layout of Kyo Machiya is called "eel beds". It's because its frontage is narrow, but the inside is long and deep. In one side of the house, the earthen floor stretches from the entrance to the back and three rooms lie side by side along with it.

This is the typical Kyo Machiya style, "One line, three room".

Entrance hall and Miseniwa : Earthen space

The entrance hall is called "Mise niwa", which is an earthen space. This is simply a welcome space. When you arrive, you can just sit on the widnow sill to take a rest. You will be relaxed to have a light through the protruding wooden lattices window.

In Mise niwa, you have enough space to keep a rental bicycle if you like.
Daidoko : Wood floor room
This wooden floor room is in between Mise niwa and Zashiki (Dining room with tatami mats). You can use this space to keep your suitcases.
Zashiki : Dining room with tatami mats
The innermost room is Zashiki (Tatami room). The veiw of the backyard through Yukimi Shoji (slide doors with paper screen in the upper part and glass in the lower part.) is remarkable. You can relax in this room over tea/coffee to plan your Kyoto trip. If you like, you can spread out futon beds here to sleep.
Kitchen

Kitchen in Hashiri niwa (kitchin passage) has an open ceiling, which used to be Hibukuro (smoke shaft) to release smoke.

We have basic kitchen equipment & utensils, so you can bring some food in to cook, if you like.
Wash area
Two vivid red color basins with cherry blossom are set in the end of Hashiri niwa. From there, you can see the backyard from a glass door.
Bathroom / toilet
Bathtub/shower space is separated from the toilet with a curtain. All the bathroom area is decorated with white cedar boards and black/white tiles and on the wall, there is a small lattices window. While you bathe in a tub, you can enjoy the view outside. Toilet seat has a bidet function.
Engawa : Wooden floor porch(aisle)
It's in between Zashiki and backyard. Even just sitting here and having chat with your company over tea will be luxury time.
Backyard
The backyard view is expressive regardless of any seasons. In spring, you will see pink flowers of plum and peach trees. These and Japanese maple trees sprout and will be lush green leaves in summer. In fall, you will be impressed by the rich red color of maple leaves.
2nd floor
Hall

All the rooms in the second floor have wooden floorboards. On the ceiling, there is no cover, so you can see the naked beams.

From the middle hall, you can look down at the kitchen in Hashiri niwa.
Bedroom 1
This bedroom is in the west side. You can look down at the backyard through the window. A stained glass is attached on the wall and the light from outside shed the colorful shadow on the floor.
Bedroom 2
There is another bedroom. If you reserve the place for less than 3 members, this room will be shifted to a lounge room with a pair of rocking chairs.
Study space
There is a hidden space in Bedroom 2. It used to be a closet, but we renovated into a study space. Mushiko mado (Insect-cage look window) is set upon the desk. You can write your journal or letters to your family and friends with the moon light through the window.
